Salton Trough
Paleomagnetism and magnetostratigraphy of the Salton Trough, San Jacinto Fault Zone
Aim: Geology and Tectonics of the Western Salton Trough
This project is aimed at obtaining a better understanding of the regional geology and tectonic evolution of the northern Gulf of California and the formation of major strike-slip faults in southern California. The present phase of the project involves collaboration with faculty and students at WWU, University of Oregon, and UC-Davis, with a focus on the relationship between surficial uplift, erosion, and deformation during the past 2.5 Ma. The WWU portion of this NSF-funded work involves detailed magnetostratigraphy and paleomagnetism of fluvial and lacustrine sedimentary rocks in the Fish Creek and Canyon sin Nombre sections within the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.
